Completing a doctoral degree at FAU

First things first

Are you passionate about new ideas, and can you imagine pursuing a career in academia after completing your Master’s degree? If so, then FAU is just the place for you! Read on to find out all you need to know about completing a doctoral degree at FAU and discover how to become even more passionate about research. Start out on your path towards academic excellence!

Depending on your discipline and research project, there are various different paths towards obtaining a doctoral degree at FAU. No matter which path you decide on, you can rely on our seminars and events, our administrative support, and our help in networking!

Globalization means that we are increasingly coming across various titles in an academic context. We have therefore listed the three most common titles and explained the differences between them below.

Dr.

Doctoral degree

A doctoral degree involves the awarding of a doctorate as an academic qualification in a specific subject, evidenced through the issuing of a doctoral degree certificate. It is understood as proof of the ability to conduct particularly in-depth academic work.

It is not an independent course of study with lectures and examinations, rather it is independent academic work carried out under the guidance of the supervising professor on a topic chosen by the doctoral candidate themselves. The following doctoral degrees are awarded at FAU, depending on the faculty and subject: Dr. phil., Dr. theol., Dr. rer. pol., Dr. jur., Dr. med., Dr. med. dent., Dr. rer. biol. hum., Dr. rer.nat. and Dr.-Ing.

The doctoral degree consists of two parts:

  1. The independently written academic thesis (doctoral thesis)
  2. The oral examination (Rigorosum, Disputation).

People pursuing a doctoral degree are referred to as doctoral candidates, or Promovierende in German.

Use of the title

The title is placed before the name, e.g. Dr. Franziska Mustermann.

PhD

In an increasing number of countries, doctoral studies are completed as a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy). In English-speaking countries, the PhD is the academic doctoral qualification in nearly all subjects, and the highest level of postgraduate study. Unlike doctoral degrees in German-speaking countries, PhD programs often take the form of a specific study program, with special lectures and examinations and has a standard duration of three to five years (depending on the admission requirements). In Bavaria, a PhD can only be awarded after studying a certain degree program. At FAU, we offer a suitable degree program in the area of Advanced ImmunoMedicine.

A PhD consists of three parts:

  1. Regular attendance of specialist courses and other obligatory qualification measures
  2. The independently written academic thesis (doctoral thesis)
  3. The oral examination (Rigorosum, Disputation).

The period between completing a Master’s degree program and achieving a PhD in English-speaking countries is most similar to a structured doctoral program at FAU, that is generally completed within three to four years. It is possible to obtain a doctoral degree in Germany and at FAU through a shorter structured program. This represents a viable alternative to the more common individual doctoral degree and is also fairly widespread.

Use of the title

The PhD title is written after the name, for example Franziska Mustermann, PhD. In line with standard academic conventions, a PhD graduate is addressed as Dr.

Using the title Dr. with a PhD

Anyone who has completed a PhD may use the title “Dr.” without any difficulties. However, for doctoral degrees gained in the USA, the university at which the title was obtained must be on one of the two Carnegie lists “Doctoral Universities – Highest activity” and “Doctoral Universities – Higher research activity”. Researchers who have been awarded a doctoral degree in Australia, Israel, Canada or Russia may only carry the German title “Dr.” with an addition.

The statement of the Max-Planck Society provides a good summary of the topic.

Whether the “Dr.” title can be used with an international doctoral degree in Germany or if a doctoral degree gained in Germany can use the title commonly used in the other country depends on whether both countries have an equivalence agreement. The ANABIN database from the Central Office for Foreign Education is a useful place to start researching.

MD

MD

The title MD (Doctor of Medicine) is an academic degree title, which is referred to as a professional degree in some countries. Professional degrees are doctoral degrees that are awarded, for example, in the USA, Austria and in some other countries on completion of a degree program without a thesis. This is not common practice in Germany. In the USA, the title of MD is awarded as a degree qualifying the holder for the medical profession (professional degree) after completion of a degree (exam) without an additional thesis.

Professional degrees cannot be equated with the more research-based doctoral degree (Dr.). Professional degrees such as these are roughly equivalent to the Staatsexamen (State Examination) in medicine. The holder of a professional degree in medicine may only use the title in the original form in which it was granted. The title Dr. or Dr. med., or any other alternative German translation may not be used as the holder has not completed a doctoral thesis.

Use of the title

The MD title is written after the name, as in Franziska Mustermann, MD.

Timeline for a doctoral degree at FAU

  • Topic and supervision

First of all, you have to think about your research topic and find a suitable supervisor. To find a supervisor you should look carefully at the websites of the institutes and research groups and contact any potential supervisors directly.

Once you have found a supervisor, you can decide whether you would like to complete a structured doctoral program. A doctoral degree that does not include participation in a structured doctoral program is often referred to as an “individual doctoral degree”.

We recommend signing a supervision agreement!

If you would like to complete a doctoral degree at a university of applied sciences, you can naturally do so in collaboration with FAU. In this case, you will be supervised by a university professor and a professor from the university of applied sciences. Please contact the relevant Office of Doctoral Affairs if you are interested.

Guide to cooperative doctoral degrees at FAU

External doctoral candidates are employed outside the FAU. The FAU provides academic supervision and is entitled to award the doctoral degree. The allocation of theses of this nature raises questions that affect all those involved (doctoral candidates, companies, supervisors, FAU).

  • Registering your doctoral degree

Have you found a supervisor? You now need to enter your details and your doctoral research into the docDaten database.

It only takes 10 minutes to register in docDaten. You can register in docDaten here.

Once you have registered in docDaten you must apply for admission within 3 months, otherwise your registration is deleted!

    Terminating doctoral degree before graduation

If you end your doctoral research before graduation, you must inform all those involved accordingly (Section 6 (8) RPromO). Please use the following form.

  • Admission to a doctoral degree

At the latest 3 months after registering in docDaten, you must apply for admission to a doctoral degree. All the documents you require are available for downloading in docDaten. To be admitted to a doctoral degree, you must normally have successfully completed a Master’s degree program that is equivalent to a Master’s degree program from a German university. You will find specific admission requirements in the relevant doctoral regulations at the faculties.

    The Offices of Doctoral Affairs

The Office of Doctoral Affairs that is responsible for you is responsible for admission. Do you have any questions? Please contact the Offices of Doctoral Affairs.

  • Enrollment as a doctoral candidate

Enrollment offers numerous benefits, including a discounted travel pass, the possibility take part in FAU’s language and sports courses, student prices for using all the services offered by Student Services, discounts on entry to leisure, cultural and sporting activities, and the use of software licenses or media subscriptions available to enrolled students.

Enrolled doctoral candidates no longer count as students for health insurance purposes. You may therefore have to pay higher rates.

  • Time for research!

Once you have been admitted to your doctoral degree, you can finally get going: time to start your research, get exciting results and write your doctoral thesis!

A monograph or a cumulative doctoral thesis?

A monograph is a written doctoral thesis that must not be identical to any previous final theses or other published pieces of work. Parts of the doctoral thesis may be pre-published provided you state your intention to do so, but you must take care to ensure that contractual agreements with the publisher do not jeopardize publication during the doctoral procedure in any way.

For a cumulative doctoral thesis, a collection of articles which have already been published in recognized scientific journals or articles which have been accepted for publication are submitted as a doctoral thesis. The specific criteria vary from faculty to faculty. In most cases, a cumulative doctoral thesis is allowed after consulting with your supervisor.

Please note that the General doctoral regulations and Faculty doctoral regulations are legally binding.

  • Initiation of the doctoral procedure, oral examination and publication obligations.

The Offices of Doctoral Affairs at the faculties are responsible for initiating and completing the doctoral procedure.

Once you have completed your doctoral thesis, you must arrange for the initiation of the doctoral procedure. All the documents you require are available for downloading directly in docDaten.

Once your doctoral thesis has been officially accepted, you have to defend it in an oral examination.

Finally, you are obliged to publish your doctoral thesis. You will only receive your doctoral degree certificate once you have met your publication obligations.

    Publishing your doctoral thesis

The requirements and details for the doctoral procedure are stipulated in the General doctoral regulations and/or in the Doctoral regulations for your faculty.

General doctoral regulations and doctoral regulations at FAU

The doctoral procedure for all faculties is governed by FAU’s General doctoral regulations.

In addition, there are separate Doctoral regulations for the individual faculties and schools.

General doctoral regulations, Doctoral regulations of the faculties and schools and Regulations on remote examinations.
