Congenital myopathies are a group of genetic muscle disorders that develop during childhood. No specific treatments currently exist for these disorders, which affect patients severely and are often fatal. Dr. Ana Ferreiro Sieiro, an internationally renowned expert in this field, has received the 2021 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award.

An international team of researchers, including researchers from FAU headed by Prof. Dr. Dirk M. Guldi have now managed to identify the fundamental problems relating to the photophysics and photochemistry of carbon nanocolloids (CNC), and ascertain possible approaches for research into these readily available, non-toxic and adaptable nanomaterials.

Researchers at FAU have received a total of 1.32 million euros in funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for developing new procedures for voice diagnostics which can be used to diagnose and investigate voice disorders, hoarseness and their causes.

Another success for researchers at FAU: FAU researchers receive three ERC Consolidator Grants. Prof. Dr. Gerhard Krönke and Prof. Dr. Aline Bozec, both from the Chair of Internal Medicine III, and Henry Dube, Chair of Organic Chemistry I have each received one of the coveted ERC Consolidator Grants from the European Research Council (ERC).

A team of researchers at FAU led by Prof. Dr. Aldo R. Boccaccini, Chair of Materials Science (Biomaterials) is producing bioactive glass that is being tested for suitability in the treatment of giant-cell tumours of the bone at Heidelberg University Hospital as part of a cooperation project. The cancer research foundation Deutsche Krebshilfe is funding the project with approximately 212,000 euros.

The University Council confirmed Prof. Hornegger’s presidency in an unanimous vote on Friday 4 December 2020. His new term of office will start on 1 April 2021. During the last six years, Hornegger has led FAU, Bavaria’s third largest university, on a path to success. He is credited with securing funding from the Bavarian state government for site development in Erlangen and Nuremberg, including a centre for humanities in both cities and the expansion of the Faculty of Engineering.
