Once again, FAU has ranked first place in the prestigious citations per researcher category on a national level in the recently published QS Rankings 2022. At an international level, FAU continues to be listed among the 20 most prestigious universities in the world.

A research group led by Prof. Karl Mandel (Professorship of Inorganic Chemistry) at FAU has developed a magnetic particle marker which can be used to mark materials easily and which can be read using a handy device. The research findings have been published in the journal Small.

FAU has established a new professorship focusing on digital sovereignty. The University is pleased to welcome a leading expert involved in shaping the digital transformation to the post, Johannes Helbig. With its new subject area, FAU is expanding its expertise in the area of digitalisation, data science and digital humanities, acting as a pioneer among German universities.

Young refugees are generally very religious. This became clear during a pilot study run by FAU in collaboration with the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories in Bamberg. Prof. Dr. Manfred Pirner, who specialises in religious education, surveyed 45 young Muslims, orthodox Christians and Yazidis from Nuremberg, Leipzig and Berlin.

FAU is ranked 8th in Germany in the Nature Index 2021, making it one of the top ten institutes of higher education in Germany. On an international level, FAU has moved up 15 places, reaching place 127 in the global 500. The ranking also acknowledges publications in individual subjects. In Germany, FAU reached 8th place in chemistry (place 96 internationally).

At the National Model United Nations (NMUN), students from around the world take on the role of negotiators. FAU's FAUMUN delegation also participates annually. Those who want to participate can apply by August 1, 2021

In the latest Shanghai ranking, FAU is once more among the world’s best 100 universities in five subjects: Energy Science and Engineering (46th place), Telecommunication Engineering (58), Metallurgical Engineering (64), Medical Technology (69) and Chemistry (99).

The traits of coral species that have become extinct during the last few million years do not match those of coral species deemed at risk of extinction today. A research team at FAU has therefore proposed a revision of the Red List for coral.
