FAU congratulates former president Prof. Dr. Karl-Dieter Grüske on his 75th birthday Grüske, an economist, served at FAU from 2002 to 2015, initially as rector and then as president from 2010. During his tenure, he reformed the university structure and successfully accompanied two excellence initiatives.

On Friday 10 December 2021, Bavarian State Minister of Science and the Arts Bernd Sibler visited Universitätsklinikum Erlangen at FAU and discussed the current research efforts for overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic with experts at the hospital.

An important milestone for Medizincampus Oberfranken, a campus for medical training in Bayreuth, has been reached: the four partners FAU, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, Klinikum Bayreuth GmbH and Universität Bayreuth have signed the cooperation agreement in the presence of Bavarian science minister, Bernd Sibler. In the coming summer semester, the first students will begin their clinical training as part of a groundbreaking study model at the Medizincampus Oberfranken in Bayreuth.

FAU laser physicist Prof. Dr. Peter Hommelhoff has been awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize from the German Research Foundation, the most important award for research in Germany.

Computer science at FAU has done particularly well in the CHE Master’s ranking 2021. It is ranked among the top contenders in five categories: overall study situation, courses offered, support for new students, publications per researcher and doctoral degrees per professor.

In a new study conducted by the Deutsches Zentrum Immuntherapie and led by Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, patients who had no protection against an infection after failing to develop an immune response to Covid-19 after two vaccinations were given a third vaccination. The results indicated that these individuals developed a very good level of protection after receiving their third vaccine.

FAU had only just decided to introduce the 2G rule for teaching (restricting on-campus teaching to students who are only either vaccinated or recovered) when the politicians decided to introduce new rules. For example, as of this week all staff at Bavarian universities have to comply with the 3G plus rule.
