Around 50.000 reusable medical instruments are in circulation in the surgical departments at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen. They must be resterilised for the next operation, and this is ensured through meticulous reprocessing.

It is not about sunlight but X-rays: FAU researchers, together with colleagues from Austria and Switzerland, have demonstrated for the first time that a type of semiconductor that is normally used in solar cells is also sensitive to X-rays.

FAU's Chair of Biomaterials is to receive 954,782 euros in funding from the European Union to train young researchers in developing highly effective antibacterial biomaterials for medical applications.

A team of researchers at FAU has produced molecular cages which can be decomposed in a controlled manner. This might make it possible to administer medicines through the skin which come into effect once they are inside the body.

In the new Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 1181 'Schaltstellen zur Auflösung von Entzündung' (switching points for resolving inflammation) researchers from various areas of medicine and biology are investigating the basic mechanisms underlying the resolution of inflammatory responses.

One way of assessing academic excellence is according to how often university publications are cited. This is the basis of the annual CWTS Leiden ranking of top universities. FAU has good reason to be proud of its placement this year, coming in at number 11 in Germany.
