At the end of 2019, Aryaf Al-Rousan, who heads the International Relations Office at Jordan's Yarmouk University, visited FAU as part of an Erasmus Staff Week. The special thing: Her father Dr. Al-Rousan studied medicine at FAU for a few semesters in the 1960s. In the interview, both talk about their time at FAU and in Erlangen.

FAU proves its excellence in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) once more, winning four new professorships in the second round of the AI competition Hightech Agenda Bavaria. Bavarian Minister of Science Bernd Sibler announced the good news during a press conference on 15 May 2020.

Prof. Dr. Bozhidar Hristov Boytschev, born in Bulgaria, researched and taught at FAU as a visiting professor from 1991 to 1992 on a DAAD scholarship. In the interview he tells us why he is still deeply connected with Germany and what he experienced during his time at FAU.

FAU will again be awarding one-off grants from the Oskar Karl Forster scholarship fund during the 2020 academic year. Grants are available to gifted students in financial need who can apply for one-off grants to purchase books or other study materials as well as assistance with printing costs for doctoral theses.

More than 65,000 euros in donations for students in need have already been received. Laptops can also be donated which will be loaned to students in need.

The twelve member universities of Universität Bayern e.V have agreed on a directive for the implementation of the Second Bavarian Regulation on Infection Prevention and Control Measures at the Bavarian universities. FAU adopted the hygiene guidelines in this directive on 5 May 2020.

On 1 May 2020, FAU established its own department for research and teaching in artificial intelligence (AI) in health. The University is using the professorships it has received within the framework of the Hightech Agenda Bavaria for strengthening Erlangen’s position as an AI health hub for increasing innovation in universities as the new department will not follow the structure of a Chair.

Moderate quantities of alcohol can be beneficial to our health in some circumstances. In a paper recently published in Nature, a team of researchers from FAU shows that alcohol modifies the immune system in a very specific way and inhibits the development of autoimmune diseases.

One of the major challenges we are facing at the moment is how to provide doctors’ surgeries and care homes with enough protective equipment. Bearing this in mind, FAU students have launched the initiative ‘3D-Druck gegen Coronavirus’ (3D printing against the coronavirus) in order to help doctors’ surgeries and care homes by supplying them with the materials they need.

As of the coming winter semester, the University is offering two new Bachelor's degree programmes in economics taught entirely in English: International Economic Studies (IES) and International Business Studies (IBS). Students can apply from 25 May.
